In 2013 I downloaded the population history and projections for 20 year-old ROK young men from 1960 to 2040. I did the same thing today. When I did, I noticed that the numbers from 1960 to 2000 were identical, but the numbers from 2001 on are fairly different. I can understand adjustments to the projections, but could you help me understand what led to adjustments to the 2001 to 2013 data that was historical?
Thanks!
Answer Statistics Korea/2018-12-18
Dear Bruce Bennett,

Thank you for visiting the KOSIS website.

Data that you downloaded in 2013 were based on the 2010 Population Census, which was released in 2011. In the meantime, in 2016, the population was projected again on the basis of the 2015 Population Census.

Usually, the population is retrospectively projected for the 4 years before the Population Census. In other words, in relation to the 2015 Population Census, data for 2011 ~ 2014 should be retrospectively projected.

On the other hand, the Population Census for 2015 changed from the traditional Census to the Register-based Census that was based on administrative data. The change in the Census method brought about the break of time series. Therefore, after the consulting with experts, Statistics Korea decided to expand the projection period for retrospection between 2001 and 2014 to alleviate the problem of the break of time series. Please use the adjusted data for the 2001-2014 period of Population Projections.

Thank you.
